Abstract:
An illumination unit which maintains the incidence efficiency of the light of a fluorescent lamp into an optical guide plate and eliminates unfarablenesses such as pink discharge and lamp one−sided lighting, and elongates lifetime and reduce weight even with a fluorescent lamp with a diameter larger than the thickness of the optical guide plate, and a liquid crystal display device comprising the illumination unit. The illumination unit (UT) comprises a fluorescent lamp (8), an optical guide plate (1) for guiding light from the fluorescent lamp (8), a reflector (7) so arranged as to surround the fluorescent lamp (8) to reflect the light from the fluorescent lamp (8) through an opening toward the optical guide plate (1), and a reflection sheet (2) so arranged on the rear of the guide plate (1) as to reflect the light entering the guide plate (1) upward. The side face thickness directional dimension (H1) of the guide plate in the opening of the reflector (7) is made narrower than the inner−diameter dimension (H2) of the section that surrounds the fluorescent lamp (8).
