Abstract:

An illuminator exhibiting a high light utilization efficiency in an illumination system employing a plurality of light sources. The illuminator comprises a plurality of lamps (1, 1’), a prism (4), a first lens array (10) and a second lens array (12), wherein the first lens array (10) is formed such that the images of the lamps (1, 1’) are formed, at a specified interval, on a lens (11) corresponding to a specified lens (9) out of the plurality of lenses (11) in the second lens array (12) by the light from the lamps (1, 1’) passed through the specified lens (9) in the first lens array (10), all or a part of the plurality of images being formed by the lenses (9’) other than the specified lens (9) in the first lens array (10) are substantially arranged between the images of the lamps (1, 1’) thus formed, and the second lens array (12) is formed such that the images being formed thereon are illuminated on the light receiving face (14) in a specified relation.
