Abstract:
The purpose of the present invention is to reduce the power consumption of a light source in an image display device provided with a light modulation element, a color wheel, and a light source. An image display device (100) comprises: a light source (1) for emitting light; an extraction means (2) for sequentially extracting white color light and non-white color light from the light emitted from the light source (1); a detection means (4) for detecting the ratio of a white color component in an image represented by an input video signal on the basis of the input video signal; a control means (5) which does not increase the light quantity of the light source if the extraction means (2) extracts non-white color light, and controls the light quantity of the light source (1) in accordance with the ratio of white color component detected by the detection means (4) if the extraction means (2) extracts white color light; and a light modulation means (8) which modulates light of each color sequentially extracted by the extraction means (2) in accordance with a signal corresponding to the light color component in the input video signal, and displays an image in accordance with the input video signal by superimposing modulated light of each color on a display surface.
