Provided is an image display device (100) that is worn on the head of the user and projects to the user's eye image light based on image data together with ambient light so as to be viewable by the user, wherein the image display device is provided with a display optical system (10) for outputting the image light based on the image data and an ocular optical system (20) having a combining unit (22) that outputs toward the user's eye combined light formed by combining the image light output by the display optical system and the ambient light from the outside viewed by the user on a light path that is on an extension of the light path for incidence of the ambient light and is a common light path along which both the image light and the ambient light reach the user's eye. The combining unit (22) is provided with a light adjustment means (40) that includes a semitransparent reflective member wherein reflective layers and transmitting layers are disposed alternately at a prescribed interval on one surface of a transparent substrate, and adjusts the amount of image light to be reflected, and the amount of ambient light incident from the outside to be transmitted along the common light path going to the user's eye.
