Abstract:
In an image encoding method capable of dividing a macro block into partitions of various sizes, it is possible to appropriately suppress a motion vector code volume without degrading the encoding efficiency. In order to suppress increase of a code volume and increase of processing volume accompanying generation of a plenty of motion vectors when a bidirectional prediction is selected, a motion estimation unit (112) selects an optimal prediction method among the prediction method candidates decided by the prediction method candidate decision unit (13) and performs control as follows. When motion compensation is performed by using a partition of a large size, both of the bidirectional prediction and the unidirectional prediction are allowed. However, when motion compensation is performed by using a partition of a small size, the bidirectional prediction is inhibited and only the unidirectional prediction is allowed.
