The specification discloses an image decoding method. The image decoding method according to the present invention comprises the steps of: determining whether to perform a context update on a first syntax element of a current block; updating a context for entropy decoding of the first syntax element on the basis of the determination; and generating a binary for the first syntax element on the basis of the updated context, wherein whether to update the context can be determined on the basis of the number of predetermined syntax elements that have already been decoded for the current block.
