A video camera (100) constituting an example of an image pickup device is provided with: an image pickup section (110) that picks up video images; an attribute information generating section (120) that generates attribute information showing the characteristics of the video images picked up by the image pickup section (110); an evaluation section (130) that calculates in each prescribed time width an evaluation value of the video images by fitting the attribute information generated by the attribute information generating section (120) to a predetermined evaluation criterion; a stationary image extraction section (140) that extracts a stationary image from the time width corresponding to this evaluation value in the video images, if the evaluation value calculated by the evaluation section (130) exceeds an evaluation threshold value; and a threshold value alteration section (150) that alters the evaluation threshold value in accordance with the amount of change of personal information, from the information contained in the attribute information, used to recognize persons included in the video image, and/or the composition of the video image.
