Abstract:
In the present invention, the accuracy of the binary determination of a photon incident on a pixel is improved. An image pickup element is provided with a generation section and a determination section. On the basis of a signal output by a pixel, the generation section generates a digital value that indicates the amount of a charge that accumulated due to photons that were incident on pixels during an exposure period. The determination section compares the generated digital value and threshold values set for pixels for which conversion efficiency is similar when converting to digital values in which the amount of charge accumulated in the pixels is generated by the generation unit, and determines the incidence of photons on pixels that output a signal.
