Abstract:
Provided are an apparatus and method capable of displaying an HDR image having a set luminance higher than a display unit allowable maximum luminance as a bright image even in a bright viewing environment. An image for display is generated by calculating an adjustment luminance for output by multiplying a predetermined gain with respect to an output luminance calculated in accordance with an input/output transfer function adapted to an input HDR image. An image signal processing unit: sets a reference point P at a position where an output value of the input/output transfer function adapted to the input HDR image is equal to or less than the display unit allowable maximum luminance; and calculates the adjustment luminance for output by applying, to the input/output transfer function corresponding to the input HDR image, a gain function in which gains are set at one or more in an input signal range where an input signal value is equal to or less than the reference point P and gains are set at one or fewer in an input signal range where the input signal value is equal to or greater than the reference point P, to generate the image for display.
