Abstract:
It has been previously proposed to extract, from images of the surroundings picked up by an image pickup device that picks up the surroundings of a vehicle, partial images whose size and position are altered in accordance with data of a mobile unit, such as vehicle speed, steering angle, and angle of inclination. However, the image region to be recognised during actual travelling of the vehicle may vary not merely with data of a mobile unit constituted by an automobile but also with other factors. An image processing device (14) according to the invention comprises a road information acquisition section (24) and a region setting section (25). The road information acquisition section (24) acquires information relating to the road in the vicinity of the mobile unit. The region setting section (25) sets up an image region that extracts an image of the surroundings, based on information relating to the road, including at least one of: intersections; level crossings; pedestrian crossings; school zones; tunnels; gradients; stations; bus stops; parking areas; interchanges; junctions; the presence of moving units travelling in a different direction from the aforementioned moving unit; and warning information.
