A boundary line extraction unit (15) extracts, from an x-ray image in which a plurality of vertebrae are projected in a contiguous column, boundary lines (B) of the adjacent vertebrae. A vertebrae region setting unit (17) sets regions which are bounded by the adjacent boundary lines (B) as vertebrae regions (L), and each of the vertebrae regions (L) has a region number assigned thereto. If a vertebrae region setting error occurs, a setting information deletion unit (21) deletes information of the vertebrae regions (L) and the region numbers when carrying out a correction of the boundary lines. It is possible to correctively move the boundary lines (B) to arbitrary locations by deleting the setting information. On the basis of the corrected boundary line (B) locations, the vertebrae region setting unit (17) resets the vertebrae regions (L). With this configuration, by correctively moving only the boundary lines (B) which are extracted at the wrong locations and carrying out the resetting of the vertebrae regions, each of the vertebrae regions (L) is set to an accurate location. Thus, it is possible to significantly reduce work load which an operator incurs to set the vertebrae regions.
