An image viewing system (1) comprises: a first handheld unit (101); an ID transmission unit (212); an image server (103) having an acquisition section (151) and a server-side storage section (152); and a second handheld unit (102). The first handheld unit (101) has an image transmission section that transmits image data. The ID transmission unit (212) transmits to the image server a viewing-enabled handheld unit ID for specifying a handheld unit that is capable of viewing the image data in question. The acquisition section (151) acquires viewing permission information transmitted by a transmission-side handheld unit indicating that this unit is in an image data viewing-enabled condition or is not in a viewing-enabled condition, and a viewing-enabled handheld unit ID. The server-side storage section (152) stores the viewing-enabled information and viewing-enabled handheld unit ID. The second handheld unit (102) has a first reception section (135) that receives image data, and an interrogation section (132) that interrogates the image server as to whether or not the image data in question is enabled for viewing.
