Abstract:
An imaging element is provided with a first chip and a second chip. The first chip has: a light receiving unit wherein a plurality of pixels that generate and output an imaging signal according to received light intensity are disposed in a two-dimensional matrix form; and a reading circuit for sequentially selecting prescribed pixels from the plurality of pixels and reading the imaging signal output by the pixels selected. The second chip is laminated and connected to a back surface side of an incident surface for the light of the first chip along a direction orthogonal to the surface whereon the plurality of pixels of the light receiving unit are arranged, and has: a timing control circuit that controls the timing of reading by the reading circuit of the imaging signal output by the pixels selected; an A/D conversion circuit for performing A/D conversion for an analog signal output by the first chip; and a cable transmission circuit for transmitting a digital signal output by the A/D conversion circuit to a transmission cable. Thus, it is possible to provide an imaging element provided with an A/D conversion function and with a sufficiently small chip surface area.
