Disclosed are an immunoassay method for a hepatitis B virus (HBV) antigen, which can be performed with the use of a general-purpose immunoassay device and enables the detection of the HBV antigen at a high sensitivity, and a kit therefor. The immunoassay method, whereby an HBV antigen in a sample isolated from a living organism is to be immunologically assayed, comprises, in the presence of a water-soluble polymer, reacting the HBV antigen in the sample with a conjugate of a labeling enzyme/anti-HBV antibody or an antigen-binding fragment thereof/a water-soluble carrier and then detecting the conjugate bound to the HBV antigen.
