AN IMPROVED DEVICE FOR CUTTING TILES
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2003/074245
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
The device has either a single or more bits (B) useful as points to cut the tile. The cutting points having carbide or corundum are fixed within the main body (1) of the cutter. The other part of the device, which is jointable, separalable is the fork-like part (F) useful to separate the part of the tile cut by the cutting point (8). This part of the device has been made compatible with the thickness of tile with the help of metallic strips (K1, K2) to be fixed with the fork-like part (F) magnetically or by screw (S) arrangement. A similar arrangement has been made to fix the cutting bit (B) with the main body (1) of the cutter by means of small screws.

Description:
AN IMPROVED DEVICE FOR CUTTING TILES This invention relates to a device useful for cutting tiles, the said tiles include those made from marble, cement, hard rock or the like.

The importance and use of a device of the present invention had remarkably increased during recent past due to increase in use of tiles as the same give a real beauty and attraction to the floor or wall or anywhere else where they are used. The device of the present invention carries an importance due to it's effective use convenience in sue as well as the level of it's cost in addition to it's portability. It is an improvement of Pakistan patent no. 134836.

A tile cutting device of the present invention is a highly improved one and it comprises a main body having a cutting point on one end and a fork-like part on the other to separate the part of the tile cut by the device. The said cutting point is made by carbide or corundum being embedded within the main body of the device. It is the most preferred embodiment of the invention but the others carry a number of the improved features that make the use of the device better and convenient. One of the said aspect is the adaptability of the fork-like separating end which has been made adaptable now with the help of strips fixable therewith by screw arrangement or magnetically to match the thickness of the tile to be cut by the device.

In another embodiment of the invention the device of the invention is made in two pieces which are separable/joinable by a male/female screw thread arrangement. This provision makes it easy for the user of the device to have any desired combination of a cutting point and a fork-like separating end.

The said screw thread arrangement further makes the device conveniently carriable as well as useful for a wider range of thickness and material of tiles with a provision of more than one cutting point.

The device of the present invention is now described in more detail with a reference to the accompanying drawing in which : - Figure 1-6 and 9-14 show the device with three cutting points Figures 1A, 3A, 5A, 9A, 11A, 13A, 15A, 16A, and 17A show different cross-sectional views of the device Figures 7 and 8 show fixing of the carbide or corundum bit the cutting point Figures 15,16 and 17 show the device in its complete form, i. e. having the cutting point and the fork-like end joined together Figure 18 shows the cutting point with a cutting bit fixed therewith Figures 19-22 show the two separable/joinable parts of the device Figure 23 shows the device with both of its ends in joined position Figure 24 shows the device having a provision of three cutting bits at a time Figure 25 shows the fork-like part only As shown in figures 1-6, and 9-14 of the accompanying drawings a device of the present invention is shown and denoted by numeral 1, cutting point of the device is"B"which carries corundum or carbide bit used to cut the tiles. As a specific feature of the invention there are two cutting points available all of the time whereas at least one point is in reserve and can be opened an used any time.

Any two parts of the device as shown in figures 1-6 can be joined or separated with the help of male and female screws"MT"and"FT"respectively. Cross sectional construction of the device"1" makes it quite clear that the holding of the device is quite convenient and can be changed as per selection of the user. Fixing of the cutting point"B"within the body"1"is shown in figures 7 and 8 such that in figure 7 it is tight fixing whereas in figure 8 it has been fixed there in with the help of screws"S"one or two as required. This provision makes it possible for the user to change the bit easily as and when its cutting ability is decreased Figures 15,16 and 17 show the device"1"in its complete form, i. e. having both the cutting and the separating ends. The cutting end has the bit"B"to cut the tile whereas the other end having the fork-like construction denoted by"F"is used to separate the part of the tile cut by the device. The said figures show the provision of the part"F"by virtue of which it becomes adaptable and compatible with a variety of thickness of the tiles to be cut. For this purpose a metallic strip"K"is used within the open area of the fork-like part to decrease or increase its width so that it matches with thickness of the tile. This step is also done with the help of screws"S"to fix the said metallic strip"K"within the fork part. Any of the two modes may be adopted by the user and a device having such an arrangement may be selected. These figures (15-17) show the device in a complete form with a conical cutting point"B"termed herein as the cutting point or the bit Figure 18 shows the bit"B"along with corundum or carbide part inserted within the outer body and fixed therein a tight fixed manner Figures 19 and 22 show the fork-like end"F"of the device of the invention having two different cross sections and the female thread"FT"for joining the other part, the cutting part therewith Figures 20, 21 and 21A show different provisions of the invention by virtue of which the device"1" accommodated more than one point to cut the tile. Extra bits as the cutting points are safely kept covered by the other by screw thread arrangement in a male and female manner As already mentioned above fixing the bit"B"within the main body"1"ofthe device can be selected according to the nature of the point as an open one as in figures 20 and 21 at the lower part of the device with the other a groove or a ball arrangement"r"is made within the device so that the cutting and the separating parts join together properly Figure 23 shows the device with both of its parts. The main body"1"the separating part"f"one open and the other extra bit"B"are seen. The male/female thread arrangement as described above is seen along with the tight fixing of the two parts of the device with the help of ball or groove arrangement denoted by"R". Provision of changing the cutting point just by opening a part of the device and continue the job makes the device of the present invention is optional and as per selection of the user and its weight may also vary, however the main plan of the device will remain the same Figure 25 shows the separating part"F"or the device with a groove to accommodate the cutting part. It may accommodate the cutting part just by a gentle push and part so pushed therein may be taken out by similar force in an opposite direction. The arrangement as mentioned above based on a groove or spheres/balls fixed within the body of the device with the help of small springs ensures a firm holding of the two parts of the device.

WORKING To work with a device of the present invention is very easy and it does not require any specific training or other formal steps. The device in its complete form as shown in figures 15-17 and 23 is used to cut the tile by marking its part to be cut by placing and pressing the point"B"on the tile.

The deep mark on the tile is the line where the separation takes place. To separate the cut part, the fork-like end is used to hold the smaller part and a little pressure as jerk separated it with a sharp edge and along the required line of cutting. It has already been discussed above that if the thiclcness of the tile to be cut is less than that as shown in figures 19 of the drawing, it is made compatible by using a strip fixed magnetically or with the help of screws as shown in figures 16 and 17 respectively. It is merely the practice that makes the cutting of a tile with the help of device of the present more and more accurate. The device is highly accurate, reliable and durable. Furthermore, the constructional features of the device do not make it costly and beyond the reach of common users.
