Title:
IMPROVED MEANS FOR LOCKING A FLAG POLE TO A STAND
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2005/108717
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
This invention provides means for locking a pole (2) to a stand. The butt (3 )of the pole (2) is provided with a socket (4), the mouth of which is splayed by digital slots (9). A slider (10) in the form of a ring circling the socket (4) is adapted to move from a first position in which the socket (4) is a sliding fit over a stem (15) mounted. on the stand and to a second position towards the mouth of the socket (4) in which claws (13) at the extremities of the (digits 14) formed by slots (9) engage in a groove (16) of the stem (15) to lock the socket (4) onto the stem (15). Tree slider (10) is held captive on the periphery of the socket (4) by a retainer ring (11) fast on tfie wall of the socket (4) and by protrusions (12) extending from claws (13).

AMENDED CLAIMS[Received by the International
Bureau on 28 October 2005 (28.10.05) ; original claims
| 1. | 9 replaced by amended claims 1. 8] 1 Means for locking a pole (2) to a stand (6) characterized in that a socket (4) on the butt (3) of the pole (2) has a slider (10) adapted to move from a first position in which the socket (4) is a sliding fit over a stem (15) mounted on the stand (6) to a second position towards the mouth of the socket (4) in which the socket (4) is compressed into locking engagement with the stem (15). |
| 2. | The means claimed in claim 1 in which the stem (15) is located in a bearing unit (5) mounted on the stand (6). |
| 3. | The means claimed in claim 1 in which the butt (3) of the pole (2) is provided with the stem (15) and the socket (4) is mounted on the stand (6). |
| 4. | The means claimed in claim 3 in which the socket (4) is located in a bearing unit (5) mounted on the stand (6). |
| 5. | The means claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which the stand (6) is a shaft, adapted to be forced into the ground, having a kink (7) along its length upon which the bearing unit (5) is mounted with the axis of the shaft lying parallel to but remote, by the depth of the kink (7) plus the width of the bearing unit (5), from the axis of the pole (2). |
| 6. | The means claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which the mouth of the socket (4) is splayed by digital slots (9) in its wall and the slider (10) is captive on the outer periphery of the socket (4). |
| 7. | The means claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which the slider (4) is a ring. |
| 8. | AMENDED 8HEET(ARTiCLE 19) 9. |
| 9. | The means claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which fingers formed by the digital slots (9) are provided towards their extremities with claws (13) adapted to engage, in the second position, in a groove (16) in the stem (15). 10 STATEMENT UNDER ARTICLE 19(11 International Application No. : PCT/ZA2005/00064 Applicant : Sunsmart Products (Pty) Ltd Title : "Improved means for locking a flag pole to a stand" International Filing Date : 5 May 2005 Claim 1 of the patent has been amended to remove the offending phrase "...including providing the butt of the pole with a socket and a slider..."; by casting the claim, and hence its dependant claims, in a two part form; and, in order to avoid the prior art cited, by limiting the "the second position" as being "towards the mouth of the socket". In claim 8 the expression "the digits" has been replaced by "the fingers formed by the digital slots". Moreover, all the claims have been amended by inserting reference numerals in parenthesis in order to increase their intelligibility. |
| 10. | Finally, claim. |
