Abstract:
In the field of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) power transmission networks, there is a need for an improved protection circuit to protecting a whole or part of such a network. A protection circuit (10; 100), for protecting a whole or part of a HVDC power transmission network (12; 102), comprises a plurality of sets (24, 30; 108, 114, 120) of sensors (26i, 26a, 263, 264; 26s, 286, 267, 26»), each of which set (24, 30; 108, 114, 120) defines a respective protection zone (28, 32; 110, 116, 122). The protection circuit (10; 100) also includes a controller (34) that is programmed to evaluate sensor information received from the sensors (26i, 26a, 263, 264; 26s, 266, 267, 268) to determine whether a fault has occurred within a protection zone (28, 32; 110, 116, 122). The controller (34) is further programmed, in the event of a sensor (26i, 26a, 26a, 264; 26s, 26e, 267, 26e) in a protection zone (28, 32; 110, 116, 122) failing, to dynamically reconfigure the affected protection zone by including a sensor (26i, 26a, 263/ 264; 26s, 26e, 267, 268) from another protection zone (28, 32; 110, 116, 122).
