Abstract:
The purpose of the present invention is to provide an impurity removal method that enables efficient removal of impurities that are contained in aluminum or an aluminum alloy and that are difficult to remove. The impurity removal method according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises: a step for mixing Mg or a Mg alloy in a molten metal containing aluminum or an aluminum alloy and impurities; a step for maintaining the temperature of the molten metal after the mixing step in a solid-liquid coexistence temperature range; and a step for separating, from or in the molten metal in the solid-liquid coexistence temperature range, an intermetallic compound that is generated in the maintenance step and that contains solid-phase aluminum and the impurities. In the separation step, the molten metal is stirred or compressed.
