An induction hardening method for induction-hardening the outer peripheral surface (810) of the outer peripheral ring part (81) of a steel member (8) having the outer peripheral ring part (81) and a tool for hardening. The method uses pressing members (10) and (2) comprising substrates (12) and (22) having reference planes (15) and (25) and projected parts (13) and (23). The projected parts (13) and (23) are formed in complete round shapes in cross section, and pressing surfaces (11) and (21) are formed on the outer peripheral surfaces of the projected parts. The pressing members (10) and (2) are pressed against the outer peripheral ring part (81) so that the pressing surfaces (11) and (21) can be brought into contact with the inner peripheral side thereof in the state of forming clearances between the axial end faces (801) and (802) and the reference planes (15) and (25) thereof. An induction hardening treatment is applied to the outer peripheral surface (810) in the state of imparting an energizing force to the pressing members (10) and (2), and the pressing members (10) and (2) are moved forward relative to each other until the reference planes (15) and (25) come into contact with the axial end faces (801) and (802) during the treatment.
