Referring to Figure 1 , which shows an information mat 10 in accordance with the invention. The mat includes a body 12 and a tab portion 14.

The body 12 is formed as a pair of opposing surfaces, an upper surface 16 and lower surface 18. The surfaces are delimited by a border 20.

The body includes a cut-out portion 22, which interrupts the border 20. The cut-out is formed by a pair of sides, 24A and 24B, and a base 26. Imaginary line 28 completes the border 20. Located within the cut-out is the tab portion 14.

Tab portion 14 is formed by a top surface 30 and an opposing bottom surface 32. The tab is connected to the body 12 at the base 26 through a fold-line 34. The tab additionally includes a free end 36 opposite the fold-line.

The tab 14 is movable between a first position, as shown in Figure 1 , and Figure 2A, wherein the top surface 30 is presented similarly with the upper surface 16, and a second position, as shown in Figure 2B. In the second position the bottom surface 32 of the tab is presented similarly with the upper surface 16.

The fold-line 34 allows for the tab 14 to be movable relative to the body 12. The movement is achieved by lifting, and turning, the tab over the fold. The movement is clearly shown by arrow 46 in Figure 2B. Once placed in the second position the tab will be folded over the body 12.

The tab 14 covers an area slightly less than that of the cut-out 22. The reduced area allows for the tab to move freely within the cut-out and without contacting sides 24A and 24B.

The free-end 36 of the tab 14 extends as far as imaginary line 28. The border 20 is therefore substantially retained when the tab is in the first position.

Located along the upper surface 16, and including the top surface 30, is a first set of markings 36. The first set of markings is divided into an outline of an individual 38 and step-by-step instructions 40. The instructions are for aiding an individual in an emergency. The instructions begin at starting step 40A. The instructions are then broken into two streams of steps, 40B and 40C respectively.

Located along the bottom surface 32 of the tab 14 is a second set of markings 42 (as shown in Figure 2B). The second set of markings depict additional step-by-step instructions 44. The additional instructions 44 supplement the first set of instructions 40.

Turning to Figure 3 which shows the invention in use. An individual who is having trouble breathing will be laid out on the mat 10. The individual’s body is aligned with the outline 38.

Key indicators for identifying the type of emergency are providing at step 40A, this step will also form the starting point for the user.

Depending on the key indicators the user will either follow steps 40B or 40C.

If the key indicators direct a user to follow steps 40B, instructions on how to clear an individual’s airways which have been blocked will be provided. These instructions may involve the steps in correctly applying the Heimlich manoeuvre also known as abdominal thrusts. The instructions may include any other relevant instructions.

In this instance, tab 14 will remain in the first position. The additional instructions 44 will not be used to supplement instructions 40.

If the key indicators direct a user to follow steps 40C, instructions on how to resuscitate an individual in need of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) will be provided. A user will follow the stream of steps applying the instructions to the individual in need.

Depending on the nature of the emergency, steps 40C may require supplementing with additional information as contained on the bottom surface 32 of the tab 14. A user will then fold the tab portion over to present the additional instructions 44.

In this instance, tab 14 will be moved into the second position.

The additional instructions 44 will provide more information, which may be required to deal with the emergency. The information may include instructions on how to apply the compressions to the individual’s chest, the proper positioning of a user’s hands when applying the compressions, or other relevant instructions. The additional instructions 44 may include information or steps to be taken once a person has been resuscitated. Any information which may, or may not, be necessary to supplement instructions 40 may make up the second set of markings 42.

While the above description particularly describes instructions dealing with an emergency, the first set of markings 36 and the second set of markings 42 are not deemed to be limiting in this respect. The invention provides for any markings to be placed across the surfaces of the mat, wherein the second set or markings may supplement the first set of markings.
