Abstract:
This invention achieves an arrangement to reduce discomfort felt when the viewpoint of a user displayed on a display unit appears to be different from an actual viewpoint. Captured images from a plurality of different viewpoints are input to generate a plurality of virtual viewpoint images, and the plurality of virtual viewpoint images are combined to generate a combined image to be output to the display unit. A virtual viewpoint image generation unit generates a plurality of user-viewpoint-correspondence virtual viewpoint images corresponding to the respective viewpoints of a plurality of viewing users seeing a display unit. An image combining unit cuts out a portion of each of the plurality of user-viewpoint-correspondence virtual viewpoint images according to the relative positions of the viewing users and the display unit and combines the cut-out image portions, thereby generating a combined image. The combined image is generated by cutting out, from the user-viewpoint-correspondence virtual viewpoint image corresponding to each viewing user, a display area image positioned in front of the viewing user of the viewpoint corresponding to the virtual viewpoint image.
