Abstract:
This invention provides an information recording and reproducing device characterized in that it comprises a recording layer including a first layer containing a first compound, the first compound containing a first cation element, which is a transition matal element and becomes a first cation having a d orbit incompletely filled with electrons, and a second cation element, which becomes a second cation having a lower valence than the first cation, and a drive part for causing a phase change in the recording layer by at least any one of the application of a voltage to the recording layer and the flow of a current into the recording layer to record information on the recording layer, and the coordination number of the first cation element located at a second coordination position of the second cation element is not less than 80% and less than 100% of the coordination number on the assumption that the first compound is a perfect crystal.
