Abstract:

　An internal combustion engine is provided with: a means which, when treating an exhaust gas (Ga) with a post-treatment device (20), or when regenerating a post-treatment device (20), has a variable valve timing mechanism (11) open the exhaust valve (6a) which opens in the exhaust stroke during normal combustion, within the range of the afterburning period (AB), and by combusting fuel injected into the cylinder (1), feeds the high-temperature, high-pressure exhaust gas (Ga) to the post-treatment device (20), thereby raising the temperature of the post-treatment device (20) partially or in its entirety to a predetermined temperature or above; and a means which subsequently, in accordance with the timing of the opening of the exhaust valve (6a) by the temperature-raising means, performs additional injection by the injector (5) into the cylinder (1) and/or injection by the HC addition nozzle (31) provided to the exhaust port (8a), adding unburnt fuel components to the exhaust gas (Ga). As a result of this configuration, the rapid rise in temperature of the post-treatment device (20) that treats exhaust gas is promoted, and exhaust gas containing a large percentage of unburnt fuel components is fed to the post-treatment device (20).
