Abstract:
An internal combustion engine controller enabling improved response and improved controllability of the torque produced by an internal combustion engine. The control input of an intake actuator is calculated from the required amount of air. The torque of when the intake actuator is operated according to the control input under the setting of a predetermined ignition timing is calculated. From the difference between the calculated torque and the required torque, the amount of retard of the ignition timing needed to realize the required torque is calculated. The required amount of air is made to reflect the required efficiency in addition to the required torque. The required torque and the required efficiency may be independently determined. If the determined value of the required torque sharply increases over a predetermined amount of increase or over the increase rate, the determined value of the required efficiency is temporarily lowered in accordance with the sharp increase of the determined value of the requested torque.
