Abstract:
An internal combustion engine (1) is provided with a nitrogen enrichment device (16) using a gas separation film (33) downstream of a turbo supercharger (11) in an intake passageway (15). By using nitrogen enriched air obtained by partly removing oxygen for combustion, the apparent air-fuel ratio is increased even during combustion at a stoichiometric ratio. Exhaust gas that has passed through a catalyst converter (22) is introduced as a sweep gas into the nitrogen enrichment device (16) via an exhaust-diverting passageway (25). The exhaust gas, with a reduced oxygen concentration, effectively assists removal of oxygen through the gas separation film (33), whereby nitrogen enriched air with a high nitrogen enrichment level is generated easily.
