Title:
INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2002/059467
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
An internal combustion engine, wherein the temperature of exhaust gas lowers gradually from the upstream side to the downstream side in the flow direction thereof and the temperature of a working medium for a heat exchanger flowing in the direction reverse to that of the exhaust gas rises gradually from the upstream side to the downstream side in the flow direction thereof, a temperature difference between the exhaust gas temperature and the working medium temperature is minimized in a boundary portion between the liquid phase area and the two-phase area of the working medium, and a catalyst device is positioned near the minimum temperature difference position and assembled on the upstream side in the flow direction of the exhaust gas, whereby a heat generated by the catalyst device can be utilized effectively by the heat exchanger and, since the catalyst device is disposed in the two-phase area of the working medium with a constant temperature and the constant temperature is a catalyst activity temperature, the catalyst device allows the catalyst to develop a stable exhaust gas purification performance.
