Abstract:
An internal combustion engine is operated such that in an operating region where the suction air quantity is less than a predetermined value it is operated with a predetermined fixed air/fuel ratio and in an operating region where the suction air quantity is above the predetermined value, it is operated with a variable lean air/fuel ratio which increases from the fixed air/fuel ratio with increasing suction air quantity. Thus, a throttle valve (7a) whose degree of opening is controlled on the basis of a signal from a pedal stepping quantity sensor (17) is designed so that the ratio of the pedal stepping quantity to the degree of opening increases with increasing air/fuel ratio. The arrangement is such that in the operating region with variable lean air-fuel ratio, the suction air quantity is increased by a turbo charger (2). And the cooling of suction air by an intercooler (6) is controlled so that the temperature of the suction air increases with increasing air-fuel ratio, thereby enhancing atomization of fuel.
