Abstract:
 An internal combustion engine (1) is a compression ignition type of internal combustion engine. A bottom wall surface (311) has a pentroof shape, and a bottom wall surface (712) has a shape that protrudes in accordance with said pentroof shape. A piston (7) has a tapered shape (TP) at a squish portion (S). The tapered shape (TP) has a bottom end (TPB) at the side wall surface of a cavity (71) provided in a peripheral edge portion (711). An injection hole (611C) injects fuels to an area (E3), and an injection hole (611A) injects fuel to an area (E1). The injection angle (α3) of the injection hole (611C) is set smaller than the injection angle (α1) of the injection hole (611A). A squish portion (S1) is a section among the squish portion (S) adjacent to the area (E3), and a squish portion (S2) is a section among the squish portion (S) adjacent to the area (E1). The height (Hs) of the squish portion (S1) is set lower than that of the squish portion (S2).
