Abstract:

An internal combustion engine (20) is provided with: a combustion chamber (26); a fuel injection section (31) for injecting fuel into the combustion chamber (26); a cylinder (22); a piston (24) reciprocating within the cylinder (22) and having a crown surface section facing the combustion chamber (26); and an ignition delay increasing means for increasing a delay in the ignition of a mixture of fuel and air within the combustion chamber (26). A ceramic member (24a) is disposed at at least a portion of the crown surface section of the piston (24), the at least a portion being that toward which fuel is injected by the fuel injection section (31).
