Abstract:
Provided is an internal combustion engine with which it is possible to achieve normal combustion of a lean premix generated by reformed fuel, over a wide operating range. This internal combustion engine (1) is equipped with a fuel-reforming unit (2) which generates reformed fuel having a higher octane value than a liquid fuel from said liquid fuel, and introduces the reformed fuel into an output cylinder. The fuel-reforming unit (2) comprises: a first fuel reformer (2A) which includes a reciprocating mechanism which makes a piston (22) perform reciprocating movement within a cylinder (21); a second fuel reformer (2B) which includes a reforming catalyst; and a reformed gas passage (51) which connects the first fuel reformer (2A) and the second fuel reformer (2B), wherein a first reformed gas discharged from the first fuel reformer (2A) is drawn into the second fuel reformer (2B) via the reformed gas passage (51).
