Abstract:

This ion exchange membrane has: a layer S comprising a fluorine-containing polymer with sulfonic acid groups; a layer C comprising a fluorine-containing polymer with carboxylic acid groups; and multiple reinforcing materials that are disposed inside the layer S and function as reinforcing yarns and/or sacrificial yarns. When the ion exchange membrane is viewed from the top and the average membrane cross-section thickness in pure water of regions in which there are no reinforcing materials is A and the average membrane cross-section thickness in pure water of regions in which the reinforcing yarns intersect each other and regions in which the reinforcing yarns intersect with sacrificial yarns is B, A and B satisfy the expressions (1) and (2). (1) B≤240 µm (2) 2.0≤B/A≤5.0
