Provided are a jam-detecting mechanism and a scanning device with which damage or soiling of media can be limited. A scanning device (4) is provided with a jam-detecting mechanism (10). The jam-detecting mechanism (10) is provided with: a main body member (20), which is attached to a carriage (8); a linking member (30); a contacting member (40); a first rocking shaft for allowing the linking member (30) to rock on the main body member (20); a second rocking shaft for allowing the contacting member (40) to rock on the linking member (30); a biasing means; a first restricting mechanism; a second restricting mechanism; and a sensor. The biasing means positions the contacting member (40) in a basic position. The first restricting mechanism restricts the rotation of the linking member (30) with respect to the main body member (20) in one direction of the main scanning direction. The second restricting mechanism restricts the rotation of the contacting member (40) with respect to the linking member (30) in the other direction of the main scanning direction. The sensor detects rotation of the contacting member (40) from the basic position.
