Abstract:
Provided is a joining method which is capable of reducing the size of a recess groove in a surface of a metal member and also reducing the roughness of a joined surface. The present invention is provided with: an abutting step for abutting, to each other, metal members (1), (1) that have varying surface heights, and forming an abutment part (J) having a varying height; and a joining step for inserting a rotary tool F, which is for friction stirring and provided with a base end-side pin (F2) and a tip-side pin (F3), into the abutment part (J) having a varying height to perform friction stirring on the abutment part (J). The taper angle (A) of the base end-side pin (F2) is larger than the taper angle (B) of the tip-side pin (F3). A stair-like stepped part (F21) is formed on the outer circumferential surface of the base end-side pin (F2). In the joining step, the abutment part (J) is friction-stirred in a state in which the base end-side pin (F2) and the tip-side pin (F3) are brought into contact with the metal members (1), (1).
