Description:
KIT OF BLANKS FOR FORMING A DESK AND A DESK FORMED OF SUCH KIT OF BLANKS Field of invention The invention relates to a kit of blanks configured to be folded and erected into a desk, the kit of blanks comprising a first blank configured to form a base of the desk and a second blank configured to form a desktop of the desk. The invention also relates to a desk comprising a base formed of a first blank and a desktop formed of a second blank. The desk is especially intended to be used as a temporary table e.g. when additional workspaces are needed during a limited time period or as a temporary desk at a fair. Technical Background Today it is commonly known to use different types of folding tables when e.g. additional workspaces are needed during a limited time period, as a temporarily desk at a fair or as a stowaway-workbench for use now and then by a handy home fixer. However, a drawback with the folding tables of today is that they usually are cumbersome to transport to a point of use. They may be cumbersome to carry but also to store them during the transportation. A further drawback is that they may be difficult to fold into the erected state. Usually, the folding tables needs to be in a position different from a using position when they are folded into the erected state and thereafter, they need to be repositioned into the using position. Sometimes, there is a need for more than one person to fold the folding table into the erected state. A yet further drawback with the folding tables of today is that they may be unstable when in the erected state, e.g. the legs may be unintentionally unfolded when using the table. To address this, for instance document US 1,949,913 discloses a display stand and a single blank for forming such a display stand. The blank comprises a backwali panel, two sidewall panels and a top panel configured to be folded to form such a display stand. The document further discloses a locking mechanism between the two side wall panels and the top panel.

Also addressing this, for instance document US 9,701,090 B2 discloses a standing desk and four blanks for forming such a standing desk. The first blank is for forming a desktop of the desk, the second and third blanks are for forming legs of the desk and the fourth blank is for forming a support brace. The fourth blank is arranged to interlock the three other blanks when in the erected state.

When designing this kind of products, the designer typically takes a plurality of design criteria in consideration.

The design should be such that it makes efficient use of the material, is easy to transport to the point of use, is easy to prepare for use, and provides a strong structure. It is often desirable that it is strong during handling and stable in an erected state. Moreover, it should often preferably be capable of being erected into a desk without the use of any adhesive or similar means of keeping the desk erected, or at least with a minimum use of such adhesive or similar means.

Although documents US 1,949,913 and US 9,701,090 B2, as mentioned above, discloses a stand or desk formed from one or more blanks, it does not adequately address the above design criteria.

Summary of invention

It is an object of the invention to provide a desk and a kit of blanks which address at least some of the set of design criteria described above, namely that the desk should make efficient use of the material, should be easy to transport to the point of use, should be easy to prepare for use, should provide a structure which is strong during handling and stable in an erected state, and should preferably be capable of being erected into a desk without the use of any adhesive or similar means of keeping the desk erected, or at least with a minimum use of such adhesive or similar means. This object has been achieved by a kit of blanks configured to be folded and erected into a desk, the kit of blanks comprising a first blank configured to form a base of the desk, and a second blank configured to form a desktop of the desk, the first blank comprising a set of main panels comprising a first side wall panel, a back wall panel and a second side wall panel being foldably connected to each other along transversally extending fold lines and being arranged one after the other along a longitudinal direction of the first blank as seen in a flat-laid state of the first blank, two sets of edge strengthening panels comprising a first panel and a second panel being foidably connected to each other along transversally extending fold lines and being arranged one after the other along the longitudinal direction of the first blank as seen in the flat-laid state of the first blank, wherein the first panel of respective set of edge strengthening panels is foidably connected to a respective one of the first or second side wall panel, wherein in each set of edge strengthening panels, the first panel is configured to be folded relative to the respective one of the first or second side wall panel and the second panel is configured to be folded relative to the first panel such that the second panel and the respective one of the first or second side wall panel extends, as seen in an erected state of the first blank, in a forward direction respectively a rearward direction at a horizontal distance from each other, with the respective first panel forming a respective front surface of the base, and tle second blank comprising a desktop panel having a longitudinal and transversal extension, one or more front rim panels being foidably connected to a longitudinally extending front edge of the desktop panel, and one or more rear rim panels being foidably connected to a longitudinally extending rear edge of the desktop panel, the one or more front rim panels and the one or more rear rim panels being configured to be folded downwardly from the desktop panel when the second blank is positioned on the base, wherein the one or more front rim panels is/are provided with one or more slots being configured to receive an upwardly facing edge of the respective first or second side wall panel and/or the respective second panel when the second blank is moved towards the base to be positioned on the base, and wherein the one or more rear rim panels is/are provided with two slots being configured to receive an upwardly facing edge of the first respectively the second side wall panel when the second blank is moved towards the base to be positioned on the base.

With such a design, there is provided a kit of blanks for a desk having a base and a desktop. The desktop is configured to be positioned on the base and thereby forming the desk. The desk may be a desk, a work bench, a temporary desk at a fair or a stowaway-workbench for use now and then by a handy home fixer. The desk may be used both for standing purposes but also for sitting purposes. However, it should be noted that the desk is not limited to these examples but may be used for other purposes as well. It is preferred that the set of main panels and the two sets of edge strengthening panels extend along a single common plane, as seen in the fiat-laid state.

The upwardly facing edge of the first respective the second side wall panel and the respective second panel is arranged on a first transverse side of the first blank. The upwardly facing edge may extend along the entire first blank on the first transverse side of the first blank, preferably along a straight line. The upwardly facing edge of the first respective the second side wall panel and of the respective second panel may be a portion of the upwardly facing edge of the entire first blank. The upwardly facing edge of the first blank is configured to receive the desktop of the desk when the first and second blanks are in the erected state and the desktop is moved downwardly towards the base. The first blank further comprises a downwardly facing edge on a second transverse side. The second transverse side of the first blank is opposite the first transverse side of the first blank. The downwardly facing edge may extend along the entire first blank along the second transverse side of the first blank, preferably along a straight line. The downwardly facing edge of the first blank may be facing a surface on which the first blank is positioned when in the erected state. Thus, when the first blank is in the erected state, in a using position, the upwardly facing edge is facing towards the desktop and the downwardly facing edge is facing the surface, such as a floor, on which the first blank in the erected state is positioned. The set of main panels and the two sets of edge strengthening panels have a transversal extension between the downwardly facing edge and the upwardly facing edge.

Respective first and second side wall panel is arranged to be folded relative to the backwall panel. In a preferred embodiment, respective first and second side wall panel is arranged to be folded in an upwardly direction, relative to the backwall panel, as seen in the fiat-laid state, and thereby forming a more or less U-shaped base. This direction seen as an upward direction when the blank is seen in a flat-laid state will become a forward direction, towards the user, when the desk is in its intended use position. Having the more or less U-shaped base, an opening of the base is formed between the respective first and second side wall panel. The more or less U- shaped base provides for that a stable structure is achieved when the first blank is in the erected state. In a preferred embodiment, the first and second side wall panels are of the same dimensions such that a symmetric base, in relation to the side wall panels, may be formed. It is preferred that the backwall panel and the side wall panels are of the same height such that the desktop may form a flat surface forming a right angle with the base when positioned on the base.

It is preferred that the base is formed directly into the using position when the first blank is erected to form the base without the need of reposition the base before being able to use the base. Thus, when folding the side wall panels relative to the backwall panel, the downwardly facing edge of the first blank should be facing the surface on which the desk is positioned. This provides for a first blank which is easy to erect into the base without the need of reposition the base after being erected. This further provides for a base of a desk which may be folded by one person only. Hence, a more user-friendly base may be achieved. It may also be noted that the longitudinal direction of the first blank as seen in a flat-laid state of the blank will generally become a horizontal direction when the blank is folded and erected into a base. The transverse direction of the first blank as seen in a flat-laid state of the blank will generally become a vertical direction when the blank is folded and erected into a base. The two sets of edge strengthening panels, foldably connected to the respective first and second side wall panel and arranged to be folded relative to the respective first and second side wall panel, provides for that an improved stability of the base structure is achieved. The sets of edge strengthening panels increases the stability of the base by providing for an increased contact surface between the base and any surface where the base is positioned. In addition, by having the horizontal distance between the respective first and second side wall panel and the second panel of the respective set of edge strengthening panels the contact surface to the second blank increases and it becomes possible to have multiple contacts between the base and the desktop, which increases the stability even further. In a preferred embodiment, the first and second panels of the respective set of edge strengthening panels are folded inwardly, in relation to the respective first and second side wall panel, as seen in an erected state of the base. This provides for that the respective second panel is arranged inside the U shape of the base and is thereby not in the way for anyone being around the desk. This may be advantageous e.g. if the desk may be the temporary desk at a fair, wherein a lot of people may be walking around or standing by the desk. This is also advantageous in case the first and side wall panels are folded relative to the back wall panel such that the U shape is shaped with the legs being flared outwardly. Preferably, the respective first panel and the backwall panel is arranged in parallel planes, as seen in the erected state. The respective second panel may be provided with a locking tab being configured to be inserted into locking recesses arranged in the respective side wall panel. Alternatively, the respective side wall panel may be provided with locking tabs being configured to be inserted into locking recesses arranged in the respective second panel With such as design, the respective set of edge strengthening panels are kept in place when the first blank is in the erected state. This facilitates provision of a stable base of the desk. This facilitates provision of the first blank that may be folded into the erected state without the use of any adhesive or any similar means of keeping the base erected, or at least with a minimum use of such adhesive or similar means.

With the disclosed design, there is provided an attachment mechanism between the first and second blank by the one or more slots of the respective rim panels arranged to receive the upwardly facing edge of the respective side wall panel and/or the respective second panel. Thus, when the respective slot receives the upwardly facing edge, the desktop is attached to the base. Thereby, the disclosed design, wherein the desktop and the base are attached to each other, facilitates provision of a structure which is strong and stable in the erected state as well as being capable of being handled without too easily being unfolded unintentionally. The disclosed design further facilitates provision of the first and second blanks, in the erected state, being attached to each other without the use of any adhesive of any similar means of keeping the blanks together, or at least with a minimum use of such adhesive or similar means.

The one or more slots should be open-ended slots when the second blank is in the erected state in order to be able to receive the upwardly facing edge of the respective side wall panel and/or the respective second panel. However, it should be noted that the one or more slots may be closed ended slots, extending across longitudinally extending fold lines between the respective rim panel and the desktop panel, as seen in the flat-laid state of the second blank, or between an upper rim panel portion and a lower rim panel portion arranged one after the other as seen in a transverse direction as seen in a flat-laid state of the blank. The upper rim panel portion and the lower rim pane! portion may in such a design be configured to form a double walled rim with the closed ended slots thereby becoming open-ended slots, as seen in the erected state of the second blank.

The general design of the first blank being configured to be folded into a base allows for an efficient use of the material from which the blank is cut. The general design with a first side wall panel, a backwall panel and a second side wall panel arranged one after the other along a longitudinal direction in combination with providing the second blank as a separate blank makes it possible to design the respective blank with a respective generally rectangular shape. The material from which the blank is cut is typically provided on rolls or as rectangular pieces of material. The general rectangular shape of the blanks reduces the amount of material that have to be cut away from the blank. The general design makes it easy to assemble the blanks into a desk. The desk is also easily disassembled by removing the second blank from the base and thereafter once again folding the first blank back into a flat- laid state.

The kit of blanks may further comprise a third blank, wherein the third blank may comprise a set of support panels being foldably connected to each other along longitudinally extending fold lines and being arranged one after the other along a transversal direction, the support panels may be configured to be folded relative to each other to form a prismatic hollow body, wherein the third blank may further comprise an attachment tab on each of the opposite transversely extending edges of the set of support panels.

The set of support panels may comprise any number of support panels but preferably three or more support panels. The attachment tabs may be comprised on each of the opposite transversal!y extending edges of any one of the support panels. In the disclosed preferred embodiment, the attachment tabs are provided on the support panel being denoted as the third support panel of the set of support panels. Preferably, the support panels in the set of support panels are of the same length. It should be noted that the support panels may be of different length as well. However, the length of the other support panels than the third support panel should be smaller than or equal to the length of the third support panel. The first and second side wall panels may be configured to be connected to each other by the attachment tabs located at a distance from the backwa!l panel, preferably such that the first and second side wall panels becomes fixed in an orientation in which both form an obtuse angle or both form an acute angle, preferably both form an obtuse angle, with the backwa!i panel.

With the attachment tabs configured to connect the side wall panels to each other provides for that the base, and especially the side wall panels, are kept in place when in the erected state. It is preferred that the attachment tabs is configured to be received by the respective side wall panel and thereby connect the side wall panels to each other. When the side wall panels are connected to each other, the prismatic hollow body extends inside the base, between the side wall panels. When the attachment tabs are received by the respective side wall panel, the third support panel of the plurality of support panels and the backwall panel are preferably arranged in parallel planes.

The angle formed between the respective side wall panel and the backwall panel depends on the length of the backwall panel in relation to the length of the third support panel, as seen in the horizontal direction. If the length of the backwall panel is greater than the length of the third support panel, the angle formed between the respective side wall panel and the backwall panel becomes an acute angle. On the other hand, if the length of the backwall panel is smaller than the length of the third support panel, the angle formed between the respective side wall panel and the backwall panel becomes an obtuse angle. The value of the angle further depends on the distance from the backwall panel the attachment tabs are located. Preferably, the third support panel is configured to face away from the rear wall panel with the prismatic body positioned between the third support panel and the rear wall panel, with the prismatic body more preferably being arranged as close as possible to the backwall panel.

The obtuse angle and the acute angle are advantageous as both of them provide for that the side wall panels become fixed in an orientation avoids that the main panels of the base may be moved as a parallelogram. However, the obtuse angle is preferred over the acute angle because the opening between the side wall panels becomes greater if the angle is the obtuse angle. Preferably, the angle formed between the respective side wall panel and the backwall panel is between 95-120°. The greater opening may support a larger desktop and thereby a larger working area. In addition, the greater the opening is, the easier it is to attach the attachment tabs to the side wall panels.

With such a design, there is provided a strong and stable base structure, wherein the desktop may support the upwardly facing edge of the base and the third blank in the erected state may support the downwardly facing edge of the base. The third blank in the erected state arranged between the side wall panels may further be used as a footrest for a user.

The first blank may be provided with open-ended rear slots each extending along the fold line foldably connecting the backwall panel and the respective first and second side wall panel, the rear slots being formed in the respective first and second side wall panel or in the fold between the backwall panel and the respective first and second side wall panel and being configured to receive a downwardly facing edge of the one or more rear rim panels when the second blank is moved towards the base to be positioned on the base.

The first blank may be further provided with open-ended front slots each extending along the fold line foldably connecting the first panel of the respective set of the edge strengthening panels and the respective first and second side wall panels, the front slots being formed in the respective first and second side wall pane! or in the fold between the first panel of the respective set of edge strengthening panels and the respective first and second side wall panel and being configured to receive a downwardly facing edge of the one or more front rim panels when the second blank is moved towards the base to be positioned on the base. The first blank may be further provided with open-ended front slots each extending along the fold line foldably connecting the first and second panels of the respective set of edge strengthening panels, the front slots being formed in the second panel of the respective set of edge strengthening panels or in the fold between the first and second panel of the respective set of edge strengthening panels and being configured to receive a downwardly facing edge of the one or more front rim panels when the second blank is moved towards the base to be positioned on the base.

The downwardly facing edge of the one or more rear rim panels may be arranged on a first transverse side of the second blank. The downwardly facing edge of the one or more front rim panels may be arranged on a second transverse side of the second blank, opposite the first transverse side of the second blank.

With the disclosed design, there is provided an attachment mechanism between the first and second blank by the one or more open-ended slots of the first blank being arranged to receive the downwardly facing edge of respective one or more front and rear rim panels, I by which the desktop is kept in place in relation to the base of the desk. Thus, when the respective open-ended slot receives the respective downwardly facing edge, the desktop is attached to the base. Thereby, a stable and strong desk structure is achieved. By attaching the desktop to the base, the respective first and second side wall panel of the base may be fixed in a desired position.

Thereby, the disclosed design, wherein the desktop and the base are attached to each other, facilitates provision of a structure which is capable of being handled without too easily being unintentionally unfolded. The disclosed design further facilitates provision of the first and second blanks, in the erected state, being attached to each other without the use of any adhesive of any similar means of keeping the blanks together, or at least with a minimum use of such adhesive or similar means.

At least one of, and preferably all of, the open-ended slots of the first blank may be positioned relative to the slots of the rim panels of the second blank such that an inner end of the respective open-ended slots of the first blank abuts an inner end of the respective slots of the rim panels of the second blank.

With the slots of the first blank being positioned relative to the slot of the second blank, a locking mechanism between the first and second blank is achieved. Thus, when the inner end of the respective open-ended slots of the first blank abuts the inner end of the respective slot of the rim panels of the second blank, it provides for that each open-ended slot and the corresponding slot are locked in relation to each other. Thereby, the respective first and second blank is fixedly attached to the other blank without the possibilities of sliding along its plane in the slot of the other blank. This design facilitates provision of a strong and stable desk structure, wherein the first and second blanks are fixedly kept in place in relation to each other, when in the erected state.

Respective set of edge strengthening panels may further comprises a third panel being foldably connected to the second panel of the respective set of edge strengthening panels, the third panel may be configured to be folded relative to the second panel such that the third panel may be parallel with the respective first and second side wall panels, as seen in an erected state of the first blank. The provision of a third panel facilitates keeping the first and second panels of the edge strengthening panels in the intended position.

The respective third panel may be provided with the locking tab configured to be inserted into the locking recesses arranged in the respective side wall panel. Alternatively, the respective side wall panel may be provided with a locking tab configured to be inserted into a locking recess arranged in the respective third panel.

Each of the first and second side wall panels may be provided with at least one slot formed along an lower portion of the respective first and second side wall panel, the at least one slot extending in the transversal direction, the at least one slot being configured to receive the respective attachment tab positioned on each of the opposite transversely extending edges of the set of support panels. The term “lower portion" is here meant being a portion below half height of the respective side wall panel. The at least one slot may be an open-ended slot being open at the downwardly facing edge of the respective side wall panel. Thereby, the respective attachment tab may be inserted into the slot from the downwardly facing edge of the respective side wall panel. The at least one slot may be a closed ended slot, wherein the respective attachment tab may be inserted into the slot. With the disclosed design, it is possible to attach the respective attachment tab to the respective side wall panel without the use of adhesive or any similar means, or a minimum amount of adhesive or any similar means.

The front rim panel of the second blank may comprise a first portion interacting with the first side wall panel of the first blank and a second portion interacting with the second side wall panel of the first blank, wherein the first and second portions may be separated from each other along the longitudinal direction and leaves a central portion where there is no front rim panel.

With such a design, an improved usability of the desk is achieved. Having the first and second portions separated from each other provides for that the user may come close towards the desktop. This is especially advantageous if the desk is a seating desk, wherein the user should insert his/her legs into the base, between the side wall panels.

A first support panel of the set of support panels may comprise at least one locking tab being positioned on a first transverse side of the first support panel, the first transverse side being opposite to a side along which the first support panel is connected to the second support panel, and the locking tab extending from the first support panel along a transverse direction away from the first support panel, and wherein a third support panel of the set of support panels comprises at least one recess, whereby the at least one locking tab on the first support panel is/are configured to be inserted into the respective recess when the respective sets of support panels are folded to form the prismatic hollow body. The at least one locking tab of the first support panel being configured to be removably insertable into the at least one recess of the third support panel when the third blank has been erected to form the prismatic hollow body. With the disclosed design, wherein the locking tab on first support panel being configured to be inserted into the respective recess, the prismatic hollow body may be kept in place when third blank is in the erected state.

With the disclosed design, wherein the locking tab on the first support panel being configured to be inserted into the respective recess, the prismatic hollow body may be locked when in the erected state. This facilitates provision of a stable prismatic hollow body and hence, also a stable support for the base of the desk. This facilitates provision of the third blank that may be erected into the prismatic hollow body without the use of any adhesive or any similar means of keeping the package erected and/or closed, or at least with a minimum use of such adhesive or similar means. It may be noted that the labels first, second and third panels referred to when discussing the provision of locking tabs and locking recess may be different from the labels first, second and third panels when referring to the provision of attachment tabs.

The first blank may be made of a paper-based material. The second blank may be made of a paper-based material. The third blank, if present, may be made of a paper-based material. Preferably all the blanks are made of a paper-based material. Paper-based material may provide a lightweight base and desktop, as well as a lightweight prismatic hollow body, if present.
