Description:
LANGUAGE ACQUISITION/LEARNING METHOD FOR CHILDREN

The present invention relates to language acquisition/learning method which involves four basic skills and integrated activities allowing children to learn by performing, living, applying and practicing in their natural environments in consideration of the development characteristics of children who are 3 to 7 years old, and which address the five sense organs.

The present invention particularly relates to a language acquisition/learning method which increases concentration time by using common playgrounds created without disturbing the natural play environment of children, which upskills imagination and empathy abilities, and which comprises; game and activity book, story books, game materials, box games, bingos, jigsaw puzzles, name badges, masks, character models, comic characters, Memory cards, Flash cards, audios, rituals, daily plans, teacher trainings, surveys, mind maps words, student registration document, student portfolio file, classroom success graph, pre-assessment and feedback tests.

PRIOR ART

Educational games are activities that consolidate the acquired knowledge, and that allows revising this knowledge in a more comfortable environment. One of the best techniques is educational games when the language is intended to be taught as a means of communication. Because these games both provide a cheerful and comfortable environment for students, and also bring diversity to classroom activities.

According to Montaigne; "Children's games are not games, but their most serious actions". In fact, game is the primary source of learning for children and is an indispensable factor of the children's world.

Game for a child is a means of; learning, creating, gaining experience, communicating and preparing for adulthood. Children learn to share and solve problems together. As the child acts more comfortably during a game, he/she exhibits his/her skills and knowledge in a more realistic way.

The contribution of games to language teaching provides an environment for students to practice their newly acquired language according to its rules. Students practice what they have learned systematically and in a controlled way in games in a relatively uncontrolled manner.

Educational games make students exhibit a positive attitude towards each other and the teacher and provide a more positive environment in the classroom.

Today, it is possible to teach almost all lessons by the help of games and materials. Because the child gains experience, develops tactics, thinks and finds solutions and makes various decisions during the game. Thereby, intended skills, values and achievements can be easily transferred to the students during the game. In addition, games make the lesson interesting and make the students to be active. Thus, permanent learning can be mentioned.

In Ottoman schools, Arabic and Persian lessons were conducted in the form of analysis, memorization, translation of the works written in these languages and learning of grammar rules of said languages, not the spoken, living language. Since that times, Grammar - Translation method has come until today as a permanent method in foreign language teaching. This conventional method, called as Grammar Translation Method, made an impact on almost all methods and foreign language teaching that have been developed until today. Different language teaching methods have been developed in the following period, but none of them are intended for the language acquisition/learning system for pre-school period.

In the present art, the fact that Turkey does not have an original language teaching program and method and takes abroad programs much the same without considering nature of their students causes failure in foreign language learning and teaching. The studies touch have focused on the present art issues such as lack of language teaching policy, problems due to differences between practice and policy, the use of grammar- weighted method in language teaching, lack of language skills due to the fact that students do not spare sufficient time, crowded classes, lack of language usage area, lack of motivation, wrong methods in assessment and evaluation, inadequacy of training foreign language teachers and unqualified in-service training, inadequacy of course hours.

In the present art, motivation also comes to the forefront as the most prominent factor in language learning, but studies on this subject are not sufficient. The fact that individuals are aware of their learning and perception styles also plays an important role in motivating them.

As a result, due to the above-mentioned problems and because of the inadequacy of the existing solutions, it has become necessary to make an improvement in the related field.

OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to language acquisition/learning method, which is developed for eliminating abovementioned disadvantages and for bringing along new advantages to related technical field, and which involves four basic skills and integrated activities allowing children to learn by performing, living, applying and practicing in their natural environments in consideration of the development characteristics of children who are 3 to 7 years old, and which address the five sense organs.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a language acquisition/learning method which increases concentration time by using common playgrounds created without disturbing the natural play environment of children, which upskills imagination and empathy abilities, and which comprises; game and activity book, story books, game materials, box games, bingos, jigsaw puzzles, name badges, masks, character models, comic characters, Memory cards, Flash cards, student registration document, student portfolio file, classroom success graph, music, rituals, daily plans, teacher trainings, surveys, mind maps words, pre-assessment and feedback tests.

By means of the present invention which is a language acquisition/learning method involving four basic skills and integrated activities allowing children to learn by performing, living, applying and practicing in their natural environments in consideration of the development characteristics of children who are 3 to 7 years old, and which address the five sense organs; initially the teacher who will give education to children at a school is trained in the scope of a certain program. The teacher, having received the necessary training, applies a pre assessment for the children who will attend the education. According to the results of the pre-assessment, the children maintain the language education program which is formed according to their levels.

Language acquisition/learning of the children commences in the playground developed within the frame of created language acquisition method. The teacher uses the ritual that he/she chose according to the subject before starting the games of the subject. This ritual can vary depending on the subject and the number of students in the classroom. The course starts with the ritual and the games are started. Then the children play the games in the game book. There are stories associated with the game and the unit in the story books. Vocabulary of the children is developed by means of the flash card and the memory cards. Board games and wooden games developed according to the content of the units consolidate the education of children. The activity continues with the music of the unit. The children's games are supported by the activity book and the day is finished by the activities providing the hand, arm and eye coordination. By this means, students, who has completed all units, proceeded to the assessment test and acquired speaking skills achieve their goal on language acquisition.

The most important advantage of the invention is that it involves easily applied and effective games advanced in the process, compiled from the literature of Turkey and the world, integrated into the education, having targets and gains in the game book while playing during the courses. By means of playing these games in the playgrounds that are created without disturbing the natural play environment of the child, it is aimed that the concentration time of the child is increased, and that the child acquire/learn the foreign language without experiencing fear of learning and without becoming aware of being subjected to language learning by developing the abilities of imagination and showing empathy.

The children consolidate the terms that they will encounter frequently in daily life and what they have learned during the procedure by the works involving coloring, cutting, gluing, and puzzles suitable for improving children's writing skills by ensuring hand-eye coordination of them by means of the activity book.

Materials are the materials developed for children to learn by seeing, hearing, touching, feeling, and moving, and these materials are considered to help the child to understand the concepts such as form, size, color, texture and the connections therebetween. By means of these developed materials, it is intended to address more intelligence areas by supporting the language, which the children learned through games, with the other sense organs.

Surveys and diaries provide that we receive regular feedback from children and make it possible for us to know the children better. By this system, it is aimed to provide information exchange between students, teachers and parents.

The Story Set, our story books in the system are intended for real life and compiled according to the subject of the units. The children systematically repeat what they have learned in the process with the stories. As a result of these repeats, it is aimed that they learn the contexts of words.

The songs allow children to discover the sound characteristics of the language, recognize the sounds and recognize the syllables and words. The songs are prepared according to the content of the units and it is aimed to provide a background for listening, speaking and reading skills by these songs.

Rituals serve to form the social structure and connect the members of the community to each other. By means of the rituals formed in this system, it is aimed to form the language learning and prepare children for the games.

One of the best techniques is educational games when the language is intended to be taught as a means of communication. Because these games both provide a cheerful and comfortable environment for students, and also bring diversity to classroom activities. The invention provides a learning environment without making the children to be aware of the games played in the classroom. The invention provides an environment to practice the new language according to its rules. Students practice what they have learned systematically and in a controlled way in games in a relatively uncontrolled manner. The present invention allows students to exhibit a positive attitude towards each other and the teacher and provide a more positive environment in the classroom. By the invention the child gains experience, develops tactics, thinks and finds solutions and makes various decisions during the game. Thereby, intended skills, values and achievements can be easily transferred to the students during the game. Furthermore, there are daily lesson plans improved for teachers in our invention.

The subject matter language acquisition method pre-school education model can be applied to pre-school institutions, foreign consulates, embassies, abroad Turkish schools, Turkish teaching centers as foreign language, non-governmental organizations, foreign language learning centers, schools associated with the Ministry of National Education, different language acquisition/learning centers in different countries for any language including Turkish. In addition, the materials, music in the system can be used in areas such as children's playgrounds, intra-familial home environment. The invention may be used in the frame of teaching Mandarin (Chinese), English, Spanish, Indian, Arabic, Russian, Portuguese, Turkish, French, German, Italian, Korean, Danish and different languages.

The present invention has also been designed to increase the attention of Turkish families and lost third generation Turks and Turkish children who live abroad over to Turkish language, to make them adapt the Turkish identity and to improve the sense of belonging of our new generation children.

The mother language provides the child with the sense of belonging whereas the foreign language means a new identity and the child does not have to accept said new identity. In addition to these, while the mother language is acquired in the form of implicit learning without requiring a conscious effort in parallel with the maturation, the foreign language is learned by being transferred from mother language in the form of open learning.

By means of present the invention, it is aimed that the children are kept away from cliched rules and they like language acquisition/learning and they acquire/learn language. The playgrounds created will make the children to overcome fear of new language learning and to acquire/learn language in a natural environment. The rituals created will be a natural dialog during the lesson and will ensure the permanence of children's memories.

The materials are in the teaching environment and are stationary. Since most of the senses are addressed by means of the materials, the attention of the students is more attracted.

The invention is a system aiming that our children realize language acquisition/learning by listening, speaking, practicing, repeating, necessitating, arising sensual desire, wherein it aims first verbal communication.

General Principles of the Present Invention:

- Education is carried out in the target language.

- The focus in the lesson is on daily spoken language.

- Vocabulary teaching is taught in sentences and the sentences are taught practically in meaningful contexts. (An average of 733 words except minimum 23 units)

- Grammar is intertwined with four basic skills, thereby evoking students.

- The students are first provided with the ability to speak.

- The students are always active in the classroom.

- The students try to accomplish learning together by hearing and practicing.

- The subjects are handled gradually from simple to complex.

- The whole system is supported by audiovisual elements and tangible materials.

- The teaching of abstract terms is done by the connection of the thoughts.

- Activities performed for the purpose of improving speaking skills take place between teacher-student, student-teacher and student-student interaction.

- The invention is based on the use of language, not the rules of language.

- The materials prepared by the invention are selected such as "at home", "at school", "on the street", "at the restaurant". The necessary words and forms of communication in these places are given, time is emphasized and, people, subject and time-based conversations are presented. Consequently, while the child acquires the mother tongue develops natural speaking competence, he/she also learns the foreign language by means of feedback, ability, guidance and education. For all these reasons, it is particularly clear that there is a need for different ways and methods than those of the mother language education when teaching foreign languages especially in early childhood. It is a highly urgent point to find a path of eliminating the mistakes and deficiencies in foreign language teacher training and supplying by means of getting away from a foreign language teaching approach that assumes teaching the language to be same as knowing the rules of the language and having knowledge about language to be same as knowing the language.
