A laser oscillator is provided with an optical resonator which comprises an orthogonal mirror and a partial reflection mirror, a laser gas which is supplied between discharge electrodes and functions as a laser medium, and a 90-degree bending mirror which functions as a polarization selection element. The orthogonal mirror has a configuration in which two reflection planes are orthogonal to each other. The 90-degree bending mirror is disposed such that the direction of polarization of oscillation light is parallel to the reference axis set within a plane orthogonal to the optical axis of the optical resonator, and the orthogonal mirror is disposed such that the direction of polarization of the oscillation light is parallel to the valley line of the orthogonal mirror. This configuration makes it possible to compensate for the anisotropy of the optical characteristics of the laser medium and stably produce linearly polarized laser light having excellent isotropy.
