Abstract:
A lathe having a spindle (11) with a chuck (14) for holding a workpiece, a spindle stock (1) for rotatably supporting the spindle (11), and a tool post (1) having one or more tools (T) mounted on it and movable relative to the spindle (11). The lathe has a tool post support body (2) placed between a machining position (A), at which the workpiece (W) is machined by the tools (T), and the spindle stock (1) and supporting the tool post (1); the spindle (11) inserted from the spindle stock (1) through the tool post support body (2) to be extended to the machining position (A); a support section (13) projectedly formed on the spindle stock (1) and supporting the forward end of the spindle (11); and a bearing (12) provided in the support section (13) and supporting, in machining of the workpiece, the forward end of the spindle (11) either at the same position as the tool support body (2) or at a position between the tool support body (2) and the machining position (A).
