A lens-carrying light emitting element array improved in light utilization efficiency. A compound lens is provided on the almost U-shaped light emitting unit of a light emitting element. When the maximal positions of light emission intensity of the almost U-shaped light emitting unit are connected, a broken line is formed. Parts of four spherical lenses having their centers positioned at the respective opposite ends of three line segments of this broken line are provided, and parts of three cylindrical lenses having axes parallel to the respective three line segments are provided in their intermediate portions to form a compound lens by disposing them adjacent to one another. In addition, the light emitting element is provided with an antireflection film for covering the light emitting unit, and the compound lens is provided on the surface of the antireflection film.
