Disclosed is a library device which can verify the movement distance of a media transfer means using an encoder count number which is counted by an encoder sensor, even if the relationship between the number of pulses of a stepping motor and the encoder count number changes. A control means (2) sets a proof factor which is used when calculating an assumed encoder count number which is assumed on the basis of the number of pulses corresponding to the movement distance of a media transfer means (5). When verifying the movement distance of the media transfer means (5), the assumed encoder count number, which is assumed on the basis of the number of pulses corresponding to the movement distance of the media transfer means (5) and the abovementioned set proof factor, is compared with an actual encoder count number, which is counted by the encoder sensor when the stepping motor is driven only for the number of pulses corresponding to the movement distance of the media transfer means (5).
