A planar light source device, a light control plate unit, and a transmissive image display device that can sufficiently uniformly scatter light from point light sources are provided. The planar light source device (10) comprises a plurality of point light sources (22) with prescribed light distribution characteristics and four light control plates (301 - 304) disposed in the plate thickness direction. A plurality of protruding sections (331 - 334) that extend in one direction are arranged in parallel on the upper surface (321 - 324) of each light control plate (301 - 304). The extension direction of the protruding sections (331, 332) and the extension direction of the protruding sections (333, 334) are substantially orthogonal. The cross-sectional shape orthogonal to the extension direction of the protruding sections (332, 334) is triangular. The profile shape v(u) in a uv coordinate system wherein the axis that passes through both ends of the orthogonal cross-section of the protruding sections (331, 333) in the extension direction fulfills 0.95vo(u)≦v(u)≦1.05vo(u). vo(u) fulfills formula (1). (wa is the width of the protruding sections (331, 333). ha is 0.10wa -1.30wa. ka is -1.00-0.78.)
