Abstract:
Provided is a light emitting element 1 which comprises: a first conductive type semiconductor rod 10 having a plurality of side surfaces 10c disposed to form the side surfaces of a polygonal column; an active layer 20 made of a semiconductor and covering the side surfaces 10c of the first conductive type semiconductor rod 10; and a second conductive type semiconductor rod 30 that covers the active layer 20. The active layer 20 includes a plurality of well layers 21 that are disposed on each of at least two adjacent side surfaces among the plurality of side surfaces 10c, and adjacent well layers 21 among the plurality of well layers 21 are separated along a ridge 10r on which the adjacent side surfaces 10c contact each other. The active layer 10 is made of a semiconductor, and includes a ridge portion 22 that is disposed on the ridge 10r and connects the adjacent well layers 21. The ridge portion 22 has a band gap that is wider than the band gaps of the plurality of well layers 21.
