Abstract:
The present invention addresses the problem of providing a light irradiation device that is thin and is capable of projecting an optical pattern and a sensor using the light irradiation device. The light irradiation device comprises a light-emitting element having a plurality of in-plane light-emitting units and a liquid crystal optical element. The liquid crystal optical element includes an optical anisotropic layer formed using a liquid crystal composition. The optical anisotropic layer has a liquid crystal alignment pattern in which the direction of the optical axis derived from a liquid crystal compound changes while rotating continuously along at least one in-plane direction. Given that one period is defined as the length for the direction of the optical axis derived from the liquid crystal compound to rotate 180° in plane, the optical irradiation device has an area where one period has different lengths.
