Disclosed is a projection display apparatus wherein the efficiency of utilization of light is high, the illuminance uniformity on the screen is also high, and the life of the light source device is prolonged. In the light source device (10) of the projection display apparatus, a first light source lamp (11), a second light source lamp (12), and a relay optical system (13) are arranged in such a way that there is not a part where the optical axes (11c1, 11c2, 11c3) of a first light beam (L1) from the first light source lamp (11) through the relay optical system (13) to the entrance end (15a) of a light intensity equalizing element (15) and the optical axis (12c) of a second light beam from the second light source lamp (12) to the entrance end (15a) agree with one another, and the optical axis (11c3) of the first light beam (L1) immediately before the first light beam (L1) enters the entrance end (15a) and the optical axis (12c) of the second light beam (L2) from the second light source lamp (12) to the entrance end (15a) are substantially parallel to each other.
