A light source (1) comprising a tubular body (2), bases (3) at both ends, and electrode pins (27) projecting from the bases (3) perpendicularly to the axis of the tubular body (2). A socket (31) comprising a socket body (32), which is provided with holes (34) in the surface (33) in contact with the base to receive the electrode pins (27) and contacts (46a) for engagement with the electrode pins (27) in the holes (34). Owing to this arrangement, the light source (1) can be engaged with and disengaged from the socket (31) simply by moving the light source (1) in the direction perpendicular to its axis. Moreover, when, for example, a plurality of light sources (1) are arranged longitudinally in line to obtain a design effect of linear illumination, the occurrence of dark portions due to the sockets (31) can be prevented since the sockets (31) are not present on the axis of the linear arrangement of the light sources (1). Accordingly, the continuity of the light emitting portions and the design effect of linear illumination can be obtained satisfactorily.
