Abstract:
A lighting device is provided with a hot cathode tube (17) and a chassis (14) in which the hot cathode tube (17) is contained. The hot cathode tube (17) has a glass tube (17a) and also has filaments (17d) which are disposed within the glass tube (17a). A gas discharge tube (64) is formed at an end wall section (60) located on one end side of the glass tube (17a) in the axial direction, and the gas discharge tube (64) is formed by causing a portion of the end wall section (60) to protrude in the direction in which the portion is separated from the filament (17d). The sealing section (65) of the gas discharge tube (64) is provided outside the chassis (14), and the direct distance (N1) from the filament (17d) to the sealing section (65) of the gas discharge tube (64) is set to be more than the maximum direct distance (N2) from the filament (17d) to the end wall section (60).
