A lighting device; and a liquid crystal display device. A lighting device (UT1) comprising an optical waveguide (2) in the form of a substantially square having a lateral surface (2a), which forms an light entrance surface, between a pair of corners (X, X), and a bar-like light source (1) having opposite ends and a section between the opposite ends composed of non-luminous sections (1a, 1a) and a luminous section (1b), respectively, and disposed to extend along the light entrance surface of the optical waveguide, it being arranged that the light emitted from the light source to fall on the light entrance surface of the optical waveguide emerges from the upper surface (2b) of the optical waveguide, wherein the optical waveguide has notches (A1, A1) formed by notching the portions corresponding to the non-luminous sections of the light source at the corners (X, X)as seen in a plan view.
