This lighting unit for an endoscope is provided at the longitudinal distal end 6 of an insertion section 2 of an endoscope 1. The lighting unit for an endoscope is provided with: a light guide 53; an extended section 52b disposed so as to receive light emitted from the distal end surface 53a of the light guide 53; a circular ring section 52a for emitting, from the outer surface of the ring-shaped section thereof, light transmitted from the extended section 52b; and a light incident section IL provided to the extended section 52b so that, within the extended section 52b, the light from the distal end surface 53a of the light guide 53 propagates toward the side of the extended section 52b, to which the circular ring section 52a is provided, the light incident section IL being tilted a predetermined angle θ relative to a plane which is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis direction of the insertion section 2, and having a light incident surface provided so as to face the distal end surface 53a of the light guide 53.
