Abstract:
This linear amplifier is provided with: a pre-amplifier 1 that amplifies an inputted differential signal; a post-amplifier 2 that amplifies an output signal from the pre-amplifier 1; an amplitude detector 3 that detects the amplitude of an output signal from the post-amplifier 2, and outputs a voltage Vdt corresponding to the detected amplitude; and a comparator 4 that controls a tail current source 10 of the pre-amplifier 1 so as to set a tail current of the pre-amplifier 1 to a fixed value when the output voltage Vdt from the amplitude detector 3 is equal to or lower than a reference voltage Vref, and to set the output voltage Vdt from the amplitude detector 3 equal to the reference voltage Vref by reducing the tail current when the output voltage Vdt from the amplitude detector 3 is higher than the reference voltage Vref. Thus, use of a transistor having a large withstand voltage is unnecessary, and high signal intensity, wide frequency band, and high linearity can be simultaneously achieved.
