The purpose of the present invention is to provide a linear motor that is suitable for a compressor having asymmetrical load characteristics in both directions of the stroke, said linear motor improving bearing service life and reducing overall system length.　This linear motor comprises a movable element 2 that has a magnetic pole frame 200 and a plurality of field element poles 210 provided in the magnetic pole frame 200, and a plurality of magnetic pole teeth 301 provided with windings 5 and disposed so as to sandwich the movable element 2, said movable element 2 and said magnetic pole teeth 301 being displaced relative to one another. The plurality of field element poles 210 are made up of primary magnets 211 arranged between the plurality of magnetic pole teeth 301, and secondary magnets arranged externally relative to the spaces between the plurality of magnetic pole teeth 301 in either direction of relative displacement. A neck part 202 of the magnetic pole frame 200 connected to a bearing 6 is provided externally in the other direction of relative displacement.
