In order to obtain a linear motor eliminating the issue with conventional linear motors of reduction in coupling strength between a machine and the linear motor as the linear motor became more compact and comprising a coil that is wound in a concentrated manner, has a high coil occupancy, and has a highly rigid magnetic array section and a thrust transmission section, the linear motor comprises: a fixed section (1) having a plurality of coils (11) wound such that each excitation phase generated therein does not overlap; a movable section (2) arranged inside the fixed section (1) and having a plurality of permanent magnets (21) stacked therein; and the thrust transmission section (28) coupled to the movable section (2). Magnetic flux (61) from the coils (11) is received, which drives the movable section (2) and the thrust transmission section (28) in the axial direction. The cross-sectional shape of the coils (11) perpendicular to the axial direction forms a concave shape open on one side. The thrust transmission section (28) is arranged so as to follow the open section where there are no concave-shaped coils (11), while also being coupled to the movable section (2) positioned in the open section.
